Purpose: Translate musical scores/choreography onto a tactile object and devise new ways to compose musical notations that involve touch.
Part One (20 min warm up) - Show me the way you move
You and your partner will pick a 20 second segment from a dance track of your choice. Capture a video of your partner dancing to the song. Don't be shy- this is a playful exercise. You will then create a way to depict the sequence of these dance moves into movement notations that capture the essence of that song.
Part Two (30 min) - Notate
Come up with at least 3 different ways you can notate the dance moves. Then, choose the best version that captures 5-10 seconds of the choreography. Think about them as stop motion frames- How can you distill your notation down to 10 frames or less?
Part Three (1 hour) - Basics in Fusion 360 + Ring Tutorial
Part Four (1 hour) - Design
You and your partner will devise new ways to read music through specialized rings, bracelets, necklaces, hoops, etc. that capture physical notations. Similar to the way braille systems work, these concentric objects will require distinct textures, keys and variations to capture the rhythmic qualities of the sound piece.
Imagine- custom waves that clip onto ring’s surface, bracelets that spin on your wrist so that notes are felt radially, series of different song segments that can be felt by lifting appropriate ring fingers.
