Designing Distance

Tiandra Ray

Objective: We are living in a new normal as we continue to adapt everyday precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19. For this assignment, students will use household materials to design solutions for the way social distancing and CDC recommendations affect our daily lives. We will focus on the following:

  • Wearing protective garments and equipment when leaving your home
  • Reducing contact with those outside of your household
  • Maintaining a 6-foot distance between yourself and others

Part 1: Choosing one of the CDC guidelines above, sketch 3 “solutions” that can address the prompts below (you can mix and match if you choose):

  • How can we maintain a sense of normalcy and human connection?
  • How can we make following the CDC guidelines easier for a specific population (like children, parents, pet owners, essential workers, etc)
  • How can we introduce an element of fun and lightheartedness into following CDC guidelines?
  • How can you use the materials in your home to help your friends and neighbors protect themselves (and others) from Covid-19?

Make a sketch for each “solution” - you may want to use storyboarding and diagramming to get your point across.

*You can find some great precedents and instructions for different PPE models in the resources tab of this assignment*

Part 2: Make a prototype! Using the materials and tools that we gathered during week 2, make a sketch prototype of your favorite “solution”.

Post: In your Remote Learning Portfolio, post photos of your sketches and prototypes. Make sure you find a blank background with good lighting and take photos of your sketches “straight on” or use a scanning app (they just need to be jpeg or png files). Make sure the “live photo” function is turned off if you are using an iphone.

Optional Next Steps: Test your design on your family/housemates and iterate!! Ask them for feedback on how you can improve your design.
