Thoughtfully fill out your reflections on this project.  You are to post in the response tab:

Reflect on at least three takeaways that you learned from creating your project.

1. I learn that old people have different point of view than us as I interview them, to illustrate, out person Beth claims that she don't really like nowadays advance devices include Youtube and phones.

2. I learned how to make things out of milk jugs, Ms.H give me Drew an idea of milk jug, I learned how to make art out of milk jugs by spraying and glues on it.

3. I think I am closer to my partner as we worked together, after the interview, my leg is hurting and my partner Drew wait for me patiently and we cross the field slowly and we had a nice chat together.

Explain what was difficult for you during this process and why.

The hardest part is definitely our milk jug project, it's a hard process and there are many steps to follow, we need to spray, cut, hot glue, LED lights. Therefore it is very tough for us. I don't know what we are suppose to do for two classes because I am very vague about what to do, but teachers are so helpful and I was able to go through hardships.

Talk about feedback that you received and how you were able to incorporate that into your process.

All the teachers love the virus prototype we did because it was so inspiring and I think it's successful because such feedbacks. I am thankful that I have a good partner Drew who is able to help me a lot while I was out on interview.

Jimmy and I are putting together a story on how Beth had depression and what she is doing now.

During 1980, Beth became depressed and it wasn't just her in her family that was depressed, her father was to who died a couple of weeks ago. But during this time she told her parents that she was depressed. She became depressed at age 32 and she knew, later on, she wanted to speak out to human services and homeless shelters on how they should not keep all this stress and all these bad feelings in and talk out about them and give other people hope. Hope was one of her main mottos hope because she has told herself this all the time because depression is a very strong thing and she gives herself to hope and hopes when she speaks out to other people she gives them hope. Then later on in her life, on September 11, 2001, 9/11 happened and she thought this was the turning point in the world. She thought that the world was a better place without as much terrorism and bombing but after it was like that. Still today she talks to a lot of human services and gives hope to those people in need.

The inspiration behind this installation was to symbolize Beth's depression and the strength it took for her to overcome this disease. Our goal of this project is to represent the hope that Beth now feels to combat depression. Our inspiration came from Beth's story she shared with us in a follow-up interview. One of the last organizations that she worked with is called HOPE. She was asked to deliver a speech for the organization and had one of her best human service speeches.  On her trip home, as she was reflecting on her speech, she looked out the window and saw a rainbow, which she felt was representative of the way she now lives her life, with hope. After a couple of iterations, we finally landed on a project using a milk jug theme that has been cut up and spray painted.  One can see the beautiful colors of yellow, light blue, and pink to represent the hope and warm feelings she felt when coming out of that speech.  There are also small dark pits inside of the milk jug to represent depression itself. As one walks away from our project the idea for them is to be left with not the darkness of depression but the hope that one can use to overcome it.

I walked to the car door with the sun beaming down on my face. Out the window a rainbow as far as the eye can see. The sense of beauty and hope filled my spirit. I would always remember that day as the eyeopening rainbow just popped with beauty.

Reflect on at least three takeaways that you learned from creating your project.

1. I learned how to use a laser cutter

2. How to use spray paint

3. I was able to manage my time

Explain what was difficult for you during this process and why.

one of the difficult parts of the project is most likely getting it done in time because when we had the idea of making a guitar, we didn't know what we were going to make it with or if we were going to buy it. Eventually we ended up laser cutting the guitar and adding the computer parts to it.

Talk about feedback that you received and how you were able to incorporate that into your process.

The feedback that we received was very critical to what we were going do for our project. We had received feedback on maybe adding string to make it playable. Eventually, one of the teachers told us that we had to start it over because our project would give us a lower grade. We ended up with a very good project thanks to the feedback that we got from our teachers.

We chose to make a guitar as our project because when he was 13 years old. Miguel grew up in Venezuela. There were two world famous guitar players from his town, this is what influenced him to start playing Guitar. He unfortunately had to give up on his dream of becoming a musician but still has his passion for guitar. He recently performed for an 101 year old lady.

Our sensory experience is sight, touch, and hearing because you would be able to play the guitar as well as touching and seeing the things that he went through. We decided that we would also spray paint a Venezuelan flag because that is where he was from.

Our project is a small guitar designed for Miguel. We chose this as our project because when he was 13 years old. He had a passion for playing the guitar. He went around playing music for people and continues to have a passion for playing guitar. Our sensory experience is sight and hearing because you would be able to play the guitar as well as seeing the things that he went through.

Miguel grew up in Venezuela. There were two world class guitar players from his town, this is what caused his to start playing Guitar. He eventually gained a passion for playing guitar and began at age 13. He recently performed for an 101 year old lady.

We decided that we would also spray paint a Venezuelan flag because that is where he was from. We also decided that we would make the strings so that they could unroll a piece of paper. When you unroll each string, you would get to learn about his life.

Artist Explanation

Our project is a guitar designed to bring back Miguel's memories of when he played the guitar as a young kid. As a young kid, Miguel grew up with two world-class Guitar players in his town. When he turned 13 years old, he began to grow a passion for Guitars. He played music for people that he knew and he met. He even played for a 101-year-old lady that he met. He grew a big passion for Guitar which is why we decided to make this.

Our project is focusing on the time that he spent doing computer science. Our guitar is made with jumper cables and a breadboard to symbolize that time that Miguel spent doing computer science. The guitar also has a strap that has been made to look like a Venezuelan flag, that way he will get the feeling of being back home and studying computer science.

When we heard the recording of Margareta's interview, many of the memories she explained had a rich sense of smells. For example, walking through a Birch forest and smelling the fresh birch barks. After discussing about the interview with my partner, we came to the conclusion that we are going to create different scented test tubes which represents different parts of her life.

The reason we chose this idea was because, scent is one of the most strongest sense, therefore it can trigger memories very easily. We can also represent a lot more things with just different scents. So for this project the different scents we will be using are, Orange, Hand sanitizer, Essential Oil, Apple, and trees. We chose these different scents because, Orange represents a lot of her child hood. When she was a child, after WW-II she ate a lot of fresh oranges which she liked a lot. This is her favorite fruit. We used Hand Sanitizer because it represents her years of working in the Bio Lab as this is a very common smell in labs. We are going to use essential oils because it will create a scent which represents Margareta. We used trees because, during and after the WW-II she used to walk through a lot of birch forests when she was young, so the smell of the forest is very strong in her memory.

As I roamed around the woods, gently touching the aged tree barks, a feeling of homesickness caught me unprepared. The smell of the birch wood and the sight of colorful mushroom laying on the ground, I was brought back to the old times. I could feel the breeze tapping my skin, and I could hear the branches cracking under my feet. I just stood in the middle of the wood and sensed the nature surrounding my body. The leaves, flowers, and grasses, I was able to sense ever subtle movement as if time has slowed down.

A time period that we are trying to focus with our test tube project is the last few years of WW2. Margareta was in Sweden at that time and war ended when she was only five. She couldn't remember a lot things about the war but she recalled that her family suffered from the lack of food. They would receive ration cards in order to obtain a small portion of food from the government and sometimes they would even eat rabbit meat for survival. During the war, Margareta's father served in the Swedish army and he hung a rifle in the hallway after his service. When the war ended on September 2, 1945, the news was everywhere in the world and Margareta still recalled her excitement after hearing from the radio. From that moment on, Margareta's living condition gradually improved and she began to eat fruits that she never had during the war. She tried oranges but hated the sour taste, she had bananas but didn't like it. Because of this experience, we are trying to incorporate these strong smells that would elicit Margareta's memories about WW2.

During the war, Sweden declared the policy of non-belligerency and remained as a neutral nation. However, their neutrality was debated over the years, and their intentions were unclear. In 1939, war broke out between Finland and Russia. Although Sweden never officially declared their assistance for Finland, thousands of volunteers were involved in the war. Later on 1940, Germany controlled the Baltic sea and restrained Sweden's trades with foreign countries. Nearly all the goods that were exported from Sweden went to the hands of Germans. Especially iron ore and ball bearings which were used in wars. As a neutral country, Sweden received pressures from both the Allied Powers and the Axis Powers. They tried to appease both sides with their demands, and at the same time, they were also building a strong military force. Throughout the war, Sweden held the initiative of conducting humanitarian missions. They offered help and assistance to thousands of refugees.
